Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), often just called autism, is a developmental condition caused by differences in how the brain develops. It shapes how a person communicates, connects with others, and experiences the world around them, and it looks different in every child, which is why support is never one-size-fits-all.

ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. It is a well-researched approach to understanding how people learn and why certain behaviors happen, focusing on what triggers a behavior and what follows it. ABA focuses on observable, measurable information to make decisions and support positive change, whether the goal is communication, daily routines, playing with others, or navigating tricky moments like transitions and mealtimes.

We provide remote services throughout North Carolina.

You'll be working with a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). A BCBA has earned, at minimum, a master's degree, completed extensive supervised clinical experience, and passed a national certification exam. Additionally, in North Carolina, BCBAs are required to hold licensure issued through the state.

At Creative Cascades, our analysts each have over 10 years of clinical experience. They've worked in a variety of settings (home, school, community, and clinic) and with a variety of age ranges, both virtually and in person.

Generally, we accept children ages 2 to 21 years old, but ultimately, eligibility is determined by your insurance plan and/or needs.

With caregiver coaching, you meet virtually with the analyst. You and the analyst work together to establish goals, and the analyst supports you in their implementation. This differs from other ABA models, where the therapist (RBT or BT) works directly with your child.

If you are using insurance, an autism diagnosis and referral are required.

If you are pursuing services through private pay, a diagnosis is not required.

If this is a service that your insurance plan covers (we can help with identifying this!), then, following intake, we submit the proposed treatment plan to them. If the service is denied, we support with navigating the appeal process.

See our Insurance page for information about insurances we are approved to work with or are in the process of seeking approval. If your insurance is not listed, please still reach out!

At a minimum, a caregiver is required to be present during sessions. However, coaching sessions can also take place in the presence of other family members and your child. Ultimately, you'll work with the analyst to determine the best approach.

Caregivers will meet with the BCBA to discuss strategies and goals. Once we identify relevant goals, we will observe routines and continue to provide ongoing support to assist in implementation. During these observations, we will work together to determine the best strategies that will be the most helpful for your family.

You'll need a computer, smartphone, or other device that allows video calls. We will provide a secure link and, as long as your device can access it, you're good to go!
